VIDEOCITY x Messeplatz: Eye/View

e-billboard, Congress Center Basel, Messeplatz 22, 4058 Basel, Switzerland

24/7 with interruptions

  • Whether by another’s gaze or an artificial lens, rarely a moment goes by uncaptured in today’s world. The visual information we receive profoundly shapes our worldviews yet is infallibly susceptible to our own subjective experiences and beliefs. Our understanding of sight and its relation to our beings has only been complicated by digital immediacy and the prevalence of technology. What was once a question of reality phrased in relation to not being seen, is now phrased in relation to not being documented, as being “seen” has taken on a completely new meaning in the wake of personal cameras, surveillance devices and digital media platforms. Technology has not only duplicated the realms of our existence, the physical and the digital, but it has also proliferated questions of consent and ethics. Most profoundly, it has left us wondering whether the consent to being susceptible to the “public eye” also extends to being subjected to CCTV cameras and other surveillance measures, and whether such surveillance measures are conscionable to begin with. In a display in the center of Basel’s public square, Videocity depicts the multifarious “Big Brother” situations that have subtly emerged in our physical and digital lives. As this reflection takes place in one of the busiest public and highly surveilled places in Basel, a self-deprecating critique is included. Escape no longer seems possible these days, even from a "Big Sister".

EYE/VIEW V

Concealed

Artists: Mia Bailey, Daniel Burkhardt, Agata Lech & Gosia Trajkowska, Maria Kapajeva, Aline Schoch, Esther Shalev-Gerz, Andrey Slaschilin, Yury Vassiliev, Nanyoung Yoon.

07.11.2023 – 7.01.2024

In the selected videos, compositional strategies are used to consciously make visible what tends to be concealed and suppressed by a society or things that cannot be expressed because of their invisible or intangible character. The videos follow the tradition of the surrealists, who appealed to the unconscious and the inexplicable.

Curated by the Videocity team.

EYE/VIEW III

Women Artists

Artists: Anna Artaker, Karin Borer, François Daireaux, Maria Hahnenkamp, Anette C. Halm, Ximena Fargas Albarran, Anna Jermolaewa, Hanne Jiménez Turcott, Ursula Mayer, Anouk Sebald, Melanie Wiora.

15.08. – 06.11.2022

For the third sequel of the “Eye/View” cycle, we invited Dr Walter Seidl, Vienna, and Xavier Kat, Oaxaca, Mexico to select video works by women artists who have influenced the video art scene in their regions. A work by VALIE EXPORT, the Austrian founder of feminist video art, was already shown in the second sequel of the cycle and the curators have focussed on the younger generations. This is the generation that still needs to be recognized abroad, and thus also in Switzerland.

Vernissage on 26th August at 21:00

Curator talk with Walter Seidl at the electronic billboard at the Congress Center Basel, Messeplatz 22.

Much has changed for us with the war. The Videocity team has been in contact with numerous artists and colleagues from Ukraine and fears for their wellbeing daily. "What can we do for you?" we asked. "Be present in the art world, with the works we have created," was the answer.

In view of the war, the annual curatorial concept of Eye/View acquired a highly-topical dimension: observing and being observed became situations that now affect everyone to an extraordinary degree. We made this threat more visible in the second part of the cycle.

1st June, 21:00, Public Viewing

Meet Copa & Sordes and Dr Andrea Domesle vis-a-vis the e-billboard Congress Center Basel, Messeplatz 22. (if possible, please bring your own glass with you).
