Simply Nature x REX Box x HKB Mediothek

Dem Kino REX Bern ist es ein Anliegen, über die Grenzen des klassischen Kinos hinauszugehen. Das internationale Netzwerk um die Kuratorin Andrea Domesle Videocity ist daher eingeladen, in der REX Box, dem ehemaligen Kassenhaus, Videokunst zu zeigen. Mit dem Gastspiel von Videocity werden Bezüge zwischen Videokunst und Spielfilm ausgelotet. Jeden Monat kuratiert eine andere Person aus dem Videocity-Team und Netzwerk das Programm. Im Zeitraum 2024/2025 widmet sich das Generalthema von Videocity einem Phänomen, das in jüngster Zeit zunehmend ins Zentrum der Debatte gerückt wurde – die „Natur”. Der Programmschwerpunkt verhandelt die Veränderungen, denen die Natur unterworfen ist und hinterfragt die Art und Weise wie Menschen die Ressourcen des Planeten beinahe aufgebraucht haben, was in Zeiten des Anthropozäns zum Sterben von Pflanzen, Tieren und letztlich des Menschen selbst führt. Wir befinden uns in einem Teufelskreis, der eine Diskussion und Reflektion über die Gründe und Konsequenzen des hier beschriebenen Prozesses einfordert. Das ursprünglich als „simply nature” geglaubte Begriffsmodell bedarf daher einer gründlichen Debatte und kritischen Haltung gegenüber politisch, sozial und kulturell aufkommenden Formen der Polarisierung.

Was einst schlicht als Natur angesehen wurde, war ein romantisches Ideal von Schönheit und Harmonie, die durch die Interaktion mit Menschen auf der Erde hergestellt wurde. Die Realität dieser Interaktion führte jedoch zu radikalen Eingriffen und in Folge nicht wiedergutmachbaren Schäden, sowie zu veränderten Perspektiven, wie denn mit diesem evolutionären Phänomen umzugehen sei.

Heute wird Natur oft durch ein digitales Interface erfahren (Biorobotik, Biohacking, 3D-Printing). Video ist ein geeignetes Mittel, um solche Entwicklungen zu analysieren, da es sich in einem virtuellen Raum befindet, der Natur mit technologischen Methoden nachzueifern versucht. Darüber hinaus spielt künstliche Intelligenz eine wesentliche Rolle, die zu einer verstärkten Debatte über künstliche Formen von Natur beiträgt. Der Titel „Simply Nature” erhält somit eine ironische Note, da es global gesehen mehrere Formen von Natur gibt, die sich voneinander unterscheiden mögen, wodurch es erschwert wird zu sagen, was Natur war, ist und sein wird.

Die Frage, die sich hier stellt, bezieht sich auf die Umstände wie der Mensch mit einer Natur in Einklang stehen kann, die immer mehr zu verschwinden droht. Wie kann sich menschliches Verhalten verändern, um die Klimakrise zu stoppen und wer sind die Protagonist:innen, die dazu im Stande sind? Die zu diesem Themenzyklus eingeladenen Künstler:innen reflektieren in ihren Videos das Verhältnis zwischen Menschen und Natur, in dem der Mensch als integraler Bestandteil von Natur angesehen werden wird.

The REX Bern cinema is striving to go beyond the boundaries of classical cinema. The international network Videocity, founded by Andrea Domesle, has been invited to show video art in the REX Box, the former box office at the entrance of the cinema. Videocity's guest performance explores references between video art and feature film. Each month, a different curator from the Videocity team and network curates the programme.

For the year 2024/2025, the theme of the Videocity cycle is dedicated to a phenomenon which has increasingly come to the forefront in recent years – “nature”. The programme refers to the changes that nature has undergone and revisions the way in which humans have almost exhausted the resources of the planet, leading to the extinction of plants, animals, and humankind itself in the era of the Anthropocene. Thus, we find ourselves in a vicious circle, sparking a conversation and reflection on the causes and consequences this process entails. What used to be “simply nature”, meanwhile necessitates a thorough debate and critical positioning regarding the growing political, social, and cultural polarisation that has taken place.

Moreover, what used to be imagined as “simply nature” was a romantic ideal of pristine beauty and harmony achieved through the interaction of human beings with the planet. The reality of this interaction, however, led to a radical interference, thereby causing irrefutable damage as well as new perspectives of how to cope with this evolutionary phenomenon.

Today, the experience of nature is often felt through a digital interface (bio-robotics, biohacking, 3D-printing). Video is a means to analyse such developments as it finds itself in a virtual realm by trying to emulate nature with technological methods. Moreover, artificial intelligence has played an increasing role in contributing to the debate about artificial forms of nature. Hence, the title “Simply Nature” has an ironic twist as there are many different forms of nature, and especially globally, the understanding differs greatly, which makes it difficult to say what nature is, was, and will be.

The question, however, is how to reconnect to a nature which has been destined to disappear. How can human behaviour be changed to stop the climate crisis and who are the protagonists that can afford to do so? The video artists in this cycle reflect on the relationship between humans and nature, whilst positioning human beings as an integral part of nature itself.
