FOOD

From 16th September to 17th October 2021, Videocity showed 6 video works on the theme of FOOD at the Markthalle Basel. Part of the Genusswoche Basel and led by curator Dr Andrea Domesle, the project invites visitors to experience food from a somewhat different, artist perspective. Whether preparation methods, ingredients or setting – food and eating are always linked to cultural conventions and norms. The selected videos revolve around supposedly natural eating behaviour, as well as eating as a practice with cultural connotations. For example, the eating behaviour of animals and the role it plays, or objects and stories that have been produced by human eating culture. The artists from Austria, Germany, Scotland, Italy and China raise questions about the connection between eating and culture, as well as hygiene, food production and other socio-political issues.

Vom 16. September bis zum 17. Oktober 2021 zeigte Videocity 6 Videoarbeiten zum Thema FOOD in der Markthalle Basel. Im Rahmen der Genusswoche Basel lädt das von Kuratorin Dr. Andrea Domesle geleitete Projekt dazu ein, Essen aus einer etwas anderen, künstlerischen Perspektive zu erleben. Ob Zubereitungsart, Zutaten oder Einstellung – Essen und Essen sind immer an kulturelle Konventionen und Normen geknüpft. Die ausgewählten Videos drehen sich um vermeintlich natürliches Essverhalten sowie um das Essen als kulturell konnotierte Praxis. Zum Beispiel das Essverhalten von Tieren und welche Rolle es spielt, oder es werden Gegenstände und Geschichten gezeigt, die von der menschlichen Esskultur hervorgebracht wurden. Die Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Österreich, Deutschland, Schottland, Italien und China stellen Fragen zum Zusammenhang von Essen und Kultur, aber auch zu Hygiene, Lebensmittelproduktion und anderen gesellschaftspolitischen Themen.
